Could The Discovery Of Aliens Disprove God/Religion? (010)

This morning a friend’s Facebook status asked the question whether or not the hypothetical discovery of alien life would disprove religion. Although he was not saying it would or wouldn’t many atheists have made the argument that such a discovery would deal a critical blow to religious belief. In this video I reply to such an argument, making the case that such a discovery would not threaten belief in God.

Studies Show That Less Than 3% Of Homosexuals Are Truly Monogamous

I was doing some quick research before posting my last comment which mentioned (briefly) the physical dangers of the homosexual lifestyle. I’ve heard these numbers before in passing but they are worth sharing here for a few reasons. First, it is pertinent to the past few blogs relating to Prop 8 being overturned by Gay Judge Vaughn Walker. Second, this data has relevant apologetic value for combating the media’s (and many pro-gay advocate’s) portrayal of the need for same-sex marriage.

The quote below is part of a pdf which goes into some pretty ugly statistics about the less told side of homosexual sex. There is a lot about the physical damage and the bacteria, viruses, STDs, etc (79 footnotes in 14 pages, not bad). This snippet below focuses on the number of sexual partners that homosexuals typically have. To break it down, if you have 33 homosexual friends who have been gay/lesbian for awhile, statistically speaking only one of them has been monogamous (with one partner). 7 of those 33 will have between 100 to 500 sexual partners in their lifetime.

Should Christians Participate in Burn A Koran Day?

SUMMARY: Pastor Terry Jones of Dove World Outreach is organizing an event for people to burn Qur’ans on 9/11. This is to protest the spread of Islamic (sharia) law.

My thoughts on this

Before I answer the question of whether Christians should participate I have a few thoughts I would like to share:

Liberal Media

1. First, the liberal media’s treatment of religious issues in general: watching this clip from CNN may not tell the whole story. Pastor Jones probably has a lot more to say (hence the links above). On the face of things it sounds extreme but when compared with the atrocities initiated by Muslims (Christians burned alive in Pakistan, more persecution in Pakistan, Bible burning & persecution in Sudan). The second link is talking about the Taliban’s response to foreign troops:

In Pakistan, partly as a backlash and response to the US and Pakistani military operations, the Taliban have targeted Christians through killings, torture, forcible conversions and burning of churches and Bibles, the report says.

Without getting into the political dispute over what our troops should/shouldn’t be doing, I only want to point out two things. One, CNN is selective on what stories they cover. They deliberately choose to not cover some, and give attention to others. In the case of this whole burn-a-Quran-day thing, they intentionally chose to paint it as a few wacky fundamentalists who are intolerant and and bigoted. Two: well, two is my next point…

I just created a new bittorrent file for downloading three different versions of the secret endowment ceremony performed in Mormon temples. According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this ceremony is sacred. You can’t help but wonder how “sacred” it is when it is constantly changing… The audio quality is poor due to the difficulty of secretly recording a secret ceremony.

Theology Matters: Apologetic Method

Nearly a month ago James White dedicated 2/3′s of a Dividing Line broadcast to discussing the biblical basis for apologetics. He focuses primarily on Colossians 2:2-8, 1 Peter 3:15, and 1 Corinthians 1:18-24. The key thing to remember is that your theology will determine they way you do apologetics. The things you believe about man’s fallen nature and the extent of the effects of sin on his capacity to reason and evaluate evidence will guide how you present evidence for God’s existence. The question, for the Christian, becomes what does the Bible say about these things?

I listened to this episode twice (the second time I transcribed it) and was blown away by how true it is that when you turn to the Scriptures you are forced to re-evaluate your apologetic method. Below is the video of this discussion, followed by my transcript. Please forgive any errors that I have missed while editing. I pray this will help both presuppositionalists and evidentialists think about the role of theology in their defense of the Christian Faith.

And good afternoon, welcome to The Dividing Line….

For by Him, all things were created, in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions, or rulers or authorities. All things have been created through Him and for Him, and He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the Church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He, Himself will come to have first place in everything.

This text from Paul’s epistle to the Colossians describes the relationship that Jesus holds to all created things. The apostle exhausts the Greek language to attempt to communicate the fact that there is nothing outside of the creative work of Jesus Christ. Listen to what he lists:

“All things were created” – Now you would think that would be enough, but mankind has an amazing ability to find ways around even the plainest statements. So Paul explains what he means by “all things.” He means things “in the heavens and on earth.” That’s pretty much everything. He means things “visible and invisible.” He means things such as “thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities.” All things have been created through Him and for Him.

False Arrest of Four Christians in Dearborn, MI

On June 18th, 2010 four Christian missionaries were illegally arrested in Dearborn, Michigan for engaging patrons of the Dearborn Arab Festival in peaceful dialog.

The Dearborn police confiscated thousands of dollars worth of video equipment from these Christians and have yet to return either the equipment or the footage of their good conduct and false arrest. This is clearly an attempt to suppress the truth which would vindicate the missionaries and implicate the Dearborn police in gross civil rights violations.

In 2009, the missionaries from Acts 17 Apologetics were harassed by festival security who lied to the police as seen in this video footage:

As anyone can see, the Christians were well behaved, even when the Muslims harassed them. Last month The same group returned to conduct peaceful evangelism and (understandably) wanted to video record their activity to avoid being falsely accused by the security guards. The Dearborn police department decided that this year the best solution to avoid the bad press from 2009 (notice the YouTube video has nearly 2,000,000 views) was to simply take the video cameras and film by force. Listen to the victims tell what happened in their own words:

It has been 24 days and still the Dearborn police has not returned the cameras or film which would settle the matter of what actually happened. David Wood comments about Ronald Haddad’s conduct in this ugly situation (see below). There were even some questionable comments made by the male police who searched one of the Christian women who was falsely arrested.

Rather than act in accord with the United States Constitution and protect the rights of all people, John O’Reilly, Mayor of Dearborn, wrote a 5 page letter accusing the members of Acts 17 Apologetics of greed, poor motives, and even went so far as saying that they desired to be arrested.
